The Joy of Savoring

How often do you sit down for a meal and then scarf down your food in minutes? In addition to nourishing our body, food nourishes our soul when we take a moment to really appreciate it. Savoring a meal gives us an opportunity to connect with all of our senses: smell, taste, sight, feel, and sound. It’s also an opportunity to connect with others as we share a meal together.

One of the greatest joys I experienced in Cuba was sharing meals and savoring the local cuisine. It fact, one of our most joyful meals was when we rolled up our sleeves and prepared food together. Even with limited resources, people in Cuba cook with passion, tradition, and love. And they share their meals with joy.

If there’s one thing, I learned from the time I spent there, it’s this: SLOW DOWN and patiently allow these magical moments to reveal themselves. Each time we sit down for a meal together, we have the opportunity to appreciate everything that went into preparing the food before us. It’s not just the joy of eating—even more so, it’s the joy of connecting on many levels.
