The Joy of Perspectives
When I woke up this morning, I had no idea I would experience so much joy today! I learned from a wise nine-year-old boy as well as his vibrant 80-year-old great-grandparents. And the dynamic exchanges between the generations (a span of over 70 years!) were particularly beautiful.
We started the day by driving around the small town of Hull, Massachusetts. From the back seat of the car, the nine-year-old boy guided us through all the highlights of the town. I would have thought he was a professional tour guide given his insightful and entertaining commentary on places to eat, the history of the area, the people around town, and the local attractions. His great-grandmother and I were blown away by his natural talent at such a young age. I couldn’t stop smiling and laughing with joy!
Later that afternoon, his great-grandfather took me to the local CrossFit gym to observe and work out with a couple of teenage athletes he was coaching. Remember, I spend countless hours in my car driving thousands of miles. My body gets stiff and my range of motion is limited. So it wasn’t a surprise that by the time we were done at the gym, I was sweating up a storm and had had an incredible time learning all types of techniques to increase my mobility.
The joyful beauty of that day was that regardless of age, we had so much to share with and offer to each other.
When we’re curious to learn, experiences, ideas, and perspectives transcend generational differences to bring us closer together and enrich our lives with joy.
